When we started sketching CropCircle, the easy path was to build something that looked good in a demo: dashboards, charts, a clean onboarding flow. The harder path — and the one we took — was spending weeks talking to farmers before writing a line of code.
The gap between agri-tech and agriculture
Most precision farming tools assume reliable connectivity, English literacy, and a farmer who has time to log into an app every evening. In practice, none of those assumptions hold for the majority of smallholder farmers in India.
So the product brief for CropCircle wasn't "add more sensors." It was "remove every step that isn't essential." That meant offline-first data capture, regional language support from day one, and a UI built around a five-minute-a-day habit rather than a dashboard someone is expected to study.
What we optimized for instead
- Time-to-first-value: a farmer should see something useful within their first session, not after a week of data collection.
- Low-bandwidth resilience: every core flow works on a flaky 2G connection.
- Trust over automation: recommendations are explained, not just delivered as a black box.
None of this is glamorous. It doesn't make for a flashy investor slide. But it's the difference between an app that gets installed once and one that gets used every season.
